Frequently asked questions
Which weaving frame is right for me?
Checklist for buying a weaving frame
size of the loom
Choose the width of the weaving frame to suit the size of the planned projects. The larger the frame, the more extensive the projects are possible. However, we recommend that beginners do not exceed a weaving width of 80 cm, as this can be physically demanding. Of the reed weaving frames with a weaving width of over 80 cm, the only other weaving frame we offer is the Ashford Rigid Heddle weaving frame . The models from other manufacturers go up to a maximum weaving width of 80 cm.
material and color of the frame
Looms are made of different types of wood, such as silver beech (Ashford), birch (Glimakra) or alder (Kromski). Buttons, levers and gears can be made of plastic or metal, depending on the manufacturer. While Ashford and Glimakra are mostly natural, Kromski also offers colored versions such as mint and pink ( Presto ), as well as a classy walnut finish ( Harfe ).
fineness of the yarns
The fineness of the fabric is determined by the number of dents in the weaving comb. More dents mean a finer fabric. Since all of our reed comb looms are compatible with different weaving combs, the fineness of the yarn can be flexibly adjusted. Typically a standard weaving comb with a dent of 30/10 or 40/10 is supplied. For more information, see our article on choosing the right weaving comb .
scope of delivery
Some looms include additional accessories such as shuttles, table clamps or double reed holders, making the overall package more (cost) efficient.
ease of use
Our reed looms are basically all beginner-friendly. A few models, such as the Ashford Knitters loom, are delivered pre-assembled. For an optimal introduction, we recommend the book " Weaving: The standard work for reed looms ", which explains all the essential basics.
budget & delivery time
Price varies depending on size, material and accessories. Choose a frame that suits your skill level and needs without breaking the budget.
expandability
Some looms can be expanded later with additional accessories, such as double loom holders or optimized weaving beams. If you are planning larger or more complex projects in the future, it is a good idea to pay attention to expandability. There are plenty of accessories available for the Ashford models in particular.
mobility and storage
If you want to transport the loom or store it easily, compact, foldable or lightweight models are a good choice. These make transport and storage much easier.
assembly and installation time
Some looms are pre-assembled, while others need to be assembled. Pre-assembled or easy-to-assemble models are advantageous for quick commissioning.
Workplace and Ergonomics
Make sure that the weaving frame is well adapted to your workplace. A comfortable working height and the correct sitting position are important for working ergonomically and avoiding long-term physical strain. Make sure that there is enough space around the frame to be able to work freely and comfortably. If there is no suitable table, it is advisable to buy the weaving frame with a stand. The Siru weaving frame from Glimakra promises particularly ergonomic working.
